SciPol Summary

This bill seeks to further expand and support the efforts of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to collect data of the Nation's waters and apply its understanding to the improvement of the Water's environmental and economic outcomes. Several cross-cutting committees (i.e., the Interagency Ocean Observation Committee, Federal Geographic Data Committee, Interagency Committee on Ocean and Coastal Mapping) are tasked with expanding use of new technologies (such as unmanned nautical vehicles and supercomputing) to collect and analyze data from the Nation's Waters. This bill also tasks NOAA with coordinating with other Federal agencies to invest in the research and workforce development of new and innovative technologies to enhance oceanic exploration and the mitigation of illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.
