SciPol Summary

The Safer Prescribing of Controlled Substances Act (HR 2734 / S 1448, 116th Congress) would implement new continuing education requirements for health practitioners who prescribe controlled substances in schedules II – V. The training mandated by this Act would allow practitioners to stay up to date on: pain management practices, including non-opioid alternatives; means to manage opioid dependence and overdose; and how to best treat individuals with a substance use disorder. These training modules must be available online and free of charge.

The ongoing opioid crisis in the US is estimated to cause 130 deaths per day. A number of legislative proposals, including this Act, seek to reduce rates of dependence and overdose on opioids.
